Alex's attention to detail and striving for perfection is such that he involves himself in every strata of Lost Valley's journey from bud burst to bottled wine. The results are thankfully self evident. The Founders The name for Lost Valley Winery came about in a rather innocent fashion. The founders had been researching wine growing areas and sites for quite some time, when one winter's day in 1995 as they were travelling north from Melbourne, they instintively took a left turn, then another left, left again, and a right turn...into the most spectacular valley they'd ever seen - and yes, they were truly lost! As you can see from the images here, the Lost Valley does indeed look like the land that time forgot, one known by the locals as the "Valley of the Thousand Hills". Lost Valley's first year in 1995 High Country Shiraz Our Region Mention the words "high country" to an Australian and you'll evoke images of snow-capped mountains, proud brumby's running wild, trout-filled streams and hardy, independent people. What's more, because of the cool to cold climate and rich soils it also guarantees we can all enjoy the premium and singular wines that this region is consistently producing. Lost Valley Wines reflect this spirit of our unique GI Region - that of the "Upper Goulburn" part of the Central Victorian High Country.   Our Wines CORTESE: A delicate and exquisite taste and aroma of citrus, pear, orangeblossom and honey. Lost Valley Winery is unique in Australia for growing Cortese, indeed it is the only known vineyard in the world outside of the traditional growing area for this rare premium variety, namely Gavi in Piedmont Italy. MERLOT - A beautifully aromatic wine, with soft round tannins, white pepper, spearmint and white truffle chocolate palate, balanced alcohol and full flavoured elegant maturity. Aged first in new French and then new American Oak for a combined total of 15 months. SHIRAZ - A complex, sublime and elegant palate of red berry, white pepper, plum and liquorice derived from our pure mountain water and richly organic red clay soil. Aged first in new French and then new American Oak for a combined total of 18 months. SAUVIGNON BLANC - Grown on the high cool slopes of Mount Buller, the low yeilds of the vineyard have produced a wine of superb quality and singular flavour. Lifted orange blossom and tropical aromas delivering a dry, alluringly crisp, balanced flavour with a delightful hint of lemon zest on the tongue and rich spice at the back of the palate.
